Ideas and stories about creativity, communication, and living in between the digital and the real.
Critic, Curator, Artist
We are all publishers, but as artists, is it good to criticize other artist’s work?
Short Movie Story: Siri Grows a Conscience
Thinking (the evolution of digital assistants) this made me wonder if I could write a short movie based on that idea. So I wrote Siri Grows a Conscience, one of the very few times I had a story idea that could actually be set in a single place and a single actor, by having our protagonist going through a crisis, and her phone, with a pinch of magic, becoming self-aware.
The Process is the Product
The beauty of using current tools to find your unique way to work takes a great amount of iteration. It takes self-awareness, testing what works and what doesn’t. This can take years.
This is tricky, yet beautiful.
Carved In The Web
When you write on the internet, no matter if it’s on social media, a blog post, or an email, treat that writing as if it will last forever. Direct messages are a different deal but to an extent. Given how fragile security layers are on the internet, it’s not a bad idea to avoid sending a friend something you would never want other people to read.
Short Movie Story: Born of Stone
That relationship between the stone and the galaxy, the small and the universal, made me realise that I wanted to use a larger palette to tell Pinuccio's story. I wanted to create a piece of work that would serve as an introduction to the artist, aimed especially at people outside of Sardinia and Italy.
Watch Twice
With many of these movies, watching them twice is really the best way to experience them. The first viewing is about getting a sense of their rhythm. The second one is to experience it fully, with a sense of their structure that gives us a way to explore further and have more fun with it.
Short Movie Story: ATM
Viral videos were already big at the time, but not as massive as they became just a few years later, so the idea felt original, and it was quite possible to put it together on a small budget.
So, after a month or so of writing, the script for ATM (a title that really shows my Kevin Smith fandom) was ready.
Emergent Cinema
Languages cross over all the time, and two recent games - Immortality and Alan Wake 2 play with cinema in ways that a lot of movies rarely have a chance to.
Best of the Year 2023
2023, has been among the best years for video games, if not the best overall. But I would argue it has been an especially good year for culture in general, Here are some of my favourites.
A Letter to Santa
People stop writing letters to Santa when they grow up, and that is fundamentally rude. I have been guilty of that same thing, but this year I have decided to break the streak and try to see what happens when, as an adult, you engage with the man. This is the conversation we had, shared with permission from the Bearded One.
Non-creative Skills for Creatives - a Primer
Creative people, often, are not great at some of the skills needed to maintain a career, outside of the parts of the work which require creativity. Here are some tips to balance that out, some of the skills needed to dance with when you want to live with creativity.
Two Speeds
From being a critic to creating: my career path, and the road towards understanding the power of curation.
Short Movie: Human After All
When I came back to Italy after finishing the single year of film school that brought me to Prague for the first time, I had no idea what to do next.
What if I could mix videogame footage with live-action scenes to show the way so many people found community and purpose in virtual worlds?
Making it (Understanding Your Meta) - Part 2
Aspiring filmmakers very often try and find guidance and strategies from people who sell too broad a solution for very specific problems, before realizing there is really no one way to find your way forward.
Making it (Understanding your meta) - Part 1
I was playing the wrong game. And I was losing my love for play.
And then it all changed.
